One year on working with the new National Hairdressing Apprenticeship and we all agree it is what the industry was lacking. A perfect link between one day a week in training college and four days with their employer in a real salon environment.
I’m almost at the end of my first year and I love the sense of direction the course gives along with the mentoring from all the girls in the salon and the passion I have for hairdressing, says our apprentice Katie O’Brien.
The shear fun of it
Hairdressing is fun, flexible and is full of opportunities, a global profession that can take you anywhere, working potentially in glamorous environments. Our senior stylist Amanda Gray spent a year in the Netherlands speaking only the language of great hair!
The key to being successful is passion and then it’s not such hard work, assures apprentice mentor Fiona O Connor. As a career, it has the potential to be highly rewarding when you help people achieve their aesthetic goals and as a bonus I’ve found it rewarding building strong client relationships. For too long there has been a lack of guidance when it comes to train and being trained to a standard that this 3 year course gives.
5 Reasons why:
- The National Hairdressing Apprenticeship is the only nationally recognised standard for hairdressing in Ireland.
- Our apprentice will work four days a week in the salon and one day a week in the Further Education Training College in Limerick.
- Our apprentice will be supported by an approved mentor in our salon and in the college by their tutor.
- Earn as you learn. Apprentices are paid a weekly apprentice rate by the employer throughout the apprenticeship.
- Apprentices will graduate after 3 years with a QQI Level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications.
How it started and how its going
Katie is is our first recruit for the apprenticeship and has gone from strength to strength on the salon floor building client trust and even gaining her own request clientele.
I was excited to start my business course in UL but as studied I felt disconnected because I always had the feeling for hairstyling and I do hope to one day do both, says Katie.
